images from silence
Photography must be silent.
It's not a matter of 'discretion', but of music.
Close your eyes, let the image speak in silence.
In the end, photography is subversive not when it frightens, upsets, or even just stigmatizes, but when it is 'thoughtful'.
Roland Barthes
Silence of the photo.
One of its most precious qualities, unlike cinema and television, to which silence must always be imposed without ever succeeding.
Silence of the image.
But also silence of the object, which it tears away from the cumbersome and deafening context of the real world.
Whatever the noise and violence that surround it, the photo returns the object to stillness and silence.
In the midst of urban confusion, photography recreates the equivalent of the desert, a phenomenal isolation.
It is the only way to walk through the city in silence, to cross the world in silence.
Jean Baudrillard (text read during the festival Rencontres internationales de la photographie d'Arles, 2000)

Knowing how to embrace silence as a way of relating to the world means knowing how to grasp and welcome memories, traces, knowing how to give hospitality to the voice of the world that looks at us, to venture into an expanded time, open to remembering.
The “photograph of silence” is not the one that merely photographs silent or fascinating places, but the one that knows how to create a space of silence within itself, a dissonant interval that stops, at least for a moment, our habitual thoughts to open them towards an elsewhere.
Silence, even in its apparent weakness, delicacy, can be a strength, where it questions us, because it cracks our certainties, because it disturbs us, offering itself in its mystery and showing us the mysterious dimension hidden in images and in reality itself.
Gigliola Foschi (The Photographs of Silence. Restless Forms of Seeing, 2015)
What does it mean, today, to photograph in Sicily?
It means visiting the villages, getting lost in roads that themselves get lost in black fields of forgotten land.
To reclaim certain alleys, certain squares, certain neighborhoods, spaces that no one considers, because they are deemed unattractive.
The rush to Eldorado has turned Sicily and almost all of Italy into one big open-air bazaar.
What use is a photographer in such a context? None.
And yet there is a use: to save what can be saved. And to hurry to do so before this last breath of real life disappears.
To be a photographer in Sicily today you have to go where there is nothing, where nothing happens.
Only there, in that semi-deserted silence, is it still possible to find beauty.
Francesco Faraci (Nomadic soul. From Pasolini to poor photography, 2022)
Above all, I seek an inner silence.
Henri Cartier-Bresson
He understood that what life gave him was something that not everyone is granted to gaze at with open eyes, like the most dazzling heart of the sun.
And in the heart of this sun there was silence.
Italo Calvino (The Adventure of a Poet, 1958)
You don't need to leave your house. Stay at your table and listen.
Don't even listen, just wait.
Don't even wait, remain in perfect silence and solitude.
The world will offer itself to you to be unmasked, it cannot do otherwise, in ecstasy it will writhe before you.
Franz Kafka (Aphorisms of Zürau, 1917/18 )
When words become unclear, I focus on photographs.
When images become inadequate, I am content with silence.
Ansel Adams
