inside the image

the impossible image

In 1969, the photograph taken by the spacecraft traveling to the Moon was published in all the newspapers; this was the first photograph of the World.

The image pursued for centuries by man appeared before our eyes, simultaneously containing all previous, incomplete images, all the books written, all the signs deciphered and not.

It was not just the image of the world, but the image that contained all the images of the world: graffiti, frescoes, paintings, writings, photographs, books, films.

We had the two poles of the age-old doubt, the image of the atom and the image of the world, finally facing each other.
The space between the infinitely small and the infinitely large was filled by the infinitely complex: man and his life, nature.

And yet this total gaze, this rewriting of everything, once again nullified the possibility of translating the total-hieroglyph. The event and its representation, seeing and being contained, once again presented themselves to man as insufficient to resolve the age-old questions.

A man sets himself the task of drawing the world

Over the years, he populates a space with images of provinces, of kingdoms, of mountains, of bays, of ships, of islands, of fish, of dwellings, of instruments, of stars, of horses and of people.

Shortly before dying, he discovers that that patient labyrinth of lines traces the image of his own face.

But couldn't what happens in Escher's paintings occur?

In an art gallery, a man looks at the landscape of a city and this landscape opens up to include the gallery that contains it and the man who is looking at it.

The problem is that of being “inside,” as Merleau-Ponty says.

I do not just look at the landscape, but I experience it, because I myself am inside the landscape, I see the landscape looking at me.

I am what I photograph at the moment I am photographing it.
Guido Guidi
If the solution to a problem has always been considered the end of a process of questions, in the case of Daguerre we also have the opposite, the beginning of the Enigma of photography.

In fact, immediately after the daguerreotype, an endless sequence of questions, fierce attacks and passionate defenses, have come down to our days without a single one of the problems and questions that accompany photography having been answered.

Indeed, a kind of unspeakability of words and a form of aphasia of thought seem to classify photography as an "impossible image", mysteriously, enigmatically ambiguous.

Images are riddles that are solved with the heart.
