For a long time I had an aversion to photography. Until I was thirty, I ignored the use of the camera.
In Paris I lived at night, wandering the city from Montparnasse to Montmartre, I went to bed at dawn and woke up at sunset.
A profusion of images from my nocturnal life kept seducing me, haunting me, and obsessing me.
I saw no other way to capture them except through photography.
The real healthy shock that a young photographer could receive came to me in 1933, with "Paris de nuit" by Brassaï:
images gathered at the frontiers of darkness.

when time does not press on them,
when the noise falls silent of the crowd
and the lynching of the hours ends.
The poets work in the dark
like night hawks or nightingales
with the sweetest song
and fear offending God.
But poets, in their silence
make far more noise
than a golden dome of stars.
