thinking in images

I finished this series* with fragments of images found while walking down the street, and not by chance in the last one appears the writing on a crumpled newspaper on the asphalt:
"how to think in images".

In this phrase is contained the meaning of all my work.

As in the phrase by Giordano Bruno:
"to think is to speculate in images"

Luigi Ghirri (* series of photographs from the work Kodachrome, 1978)
It seems to me that language is always used in an approximate, casual, careless way. Sometimes it seems to me that a pestilential epidemic has struck humanity in the faculty that most characterizes it, that is, the use of words.

But it is not only language that is struck by this plague, but also images.
We live under an uninterrupted rain of images.
Today we are bombarded by such a quantity of images that we are no longer able to distinguish direct experience from what we have seen for a few seconds on television.
Memory is covered by layers of image fragments like a garbage dump, where it is increasingly difficult for a figure among the many to manage to stand out.

If I have included Visibility in my list of values to be saved, it is to warn of the danger we are running of losing a fundamental human faculty: the power to focus visions with closed eyes, to think in images.

I think of a possible pedagogy of imagination that trains one to control one's inner vision without suffocating it and without, on the other hand, letting it fall into a confused, fleeting fantasy, but allowing the images to crystallize into a well-defined, memorable, self-sufficient, iconic form.

The eyes, this magical meeting point between us and the world, no longer find themselves dealing with this world, with reality, with nature: we always see with the eyes of others.

We end up giving up our own vision, which seems so poor compared to that developed by thousands of visual communication specialists.

All possible journeys are already described and the itineraries are already mapped out.

The only possible journey now seems to be within signs, images,in the destruction of direct experience.
